The Iron Chef

Iron Chef was a concept unfamiliar to me until this past week. The Japanese version is a lot different from the American version especially due to the fact that the Japanese one is much older. First I watched the Japanese version and I was captivated by it from the first minute. Starting from the impressive “Kitchen Stadium” to the Iron Chefs themselves the entire concept was brilliant. A world renowned chef would be chosen to compete against one of the Iron Chefs and they would prepare various dishes to try and defeat each other. They would get a time of one hour to do it.

The Japanese version had a glorious feeling to it with the orchestra music at the beginning. The host was a Japanese man who would at times seem ridiculous due to his acting or clothing. The competition between the cooks seem very intense and the judging is a nervous time for the chefs. Basically they take it the competition very seriously.

In the American version the music is more suited to present times and host seems more casual. There is an overall casual feeling and the competition is more relaxed. The dishes look more fancy and elaborate and the some of the skills during cooking are really impressive. It is definitely for the people of today.

After watching one episode from each one of them I am looking forward to a few more. The show is quite interesting and it’s the first time I witnessed a competition in cooking.
