First Taste of Chinese Food at Tech

It was Tuesday and I had a quiz waiting for me in Maths recitation class. I had carefully planned out the schedule for the day in order to finish all my assignments. My GT 1000 class ended at 1 o' clock and I had 2 hours to revise for the quiz. I devoted half an hour of that time to lunch. As I made my way through the food sections at Brittain dining hall, I noticed all the usual food in each section. Usually I am satisfied with the quality of food at Brittain so I was content with the food they had at that time. As I made my way to the left half of the dining hall, I noticed a new section where they where serving something new.

At first I ignored it as I was engrossed in my own food. I had almost completed my meal and was about to go to the library to revise Maths. Out of curiosity I had a second look at the new section. It was Chinese food. The menu said "Kung Pao chicken with Rice". From far it was hard to say what kind of food it was but the name caught my attention. I disposed off my old meal and suddenly had a renewed hunger. It had been ages since I last ate Chinese food. Back in Dubai, Chinese food always demanded a special occasion so it was hard to come by. Therefore I was enthralled when I had my first glimpse of Chinese food in the dining hall. Chinese food generally takes a while to prepare. Same was the case here but I did not mind waiting.

I forgot about the quiz and eagerly looked on as the dish was prepared. It had broccoli, capsicum and bits of other vegetables. Then a sauce was added which resembled soya sauce but I was not sure. Finally the chicken was added and then the rice. I took the plate and sat down. The smell was tantalizing. It had the unique smell of Chinese food. I took each bite slowly to truly enjoy the meal. I must admit that it wasn't perfect but it was something different and something I liked. I took my time and finished it. By the end of the meal I suddenly realized that I had overeaten but I was satisfied and slowly made my way to the library.

  1. I've found that most ethnic food served at Woodruff and Brittain halls are sub-par. I prefer that they stick to good ol' Southern fare and delve into international cuisine only if they can do it properly.

For instance the other day, Woodruff served shrimp noodles which were plain bad in my opinion... don't get me wrong - i'm a huge fan of ethnic food, but I suggest looking outside the meal plan for a decent ethnic fare.

  2. Brittain is probably not the best place to look for ethnic food but in my case I had not had Chinese for a while so it was something new and different.

  3. I agree- the dining halls aren't very good at making international cuisine. However it is nice to try something other than the usual cheeseburger every meal.
