Over the first few weeks at Georgia Tech, I have started pondering the dining hall's affects on health. At home, my family eats nutritious meals filled with fruits and vegetables, as we are part of a co-op of ten families that buys in season fruits and vegetables. However, at Tech, there is a wide variety of food available, and I don't usually chose to pass up the other food and fill my diet with the same wholesome food that I used to. I try to supplement my diet with such things as apples and salads, but having an "all you can eat" style dining hall can prove deadly. I can eat, and eat in large quantities.
Lately I've discovered Brittan's soups. I never knew they existed until a week ago, and I've slowly started trying them out--however, the quality is very erratic. For instance, yesterday for lunch I tried their tomato soup, which was surprisingly good--it reminded me of the delectable tomato soup my mother prepares at home. However, for dinner I tried their beef and vegetable soup. Expecting the same success as before, I dipped into the pot and drew a full serving of it, but to disastrous consequences. I'm not a picky eater--my family has taught me to eat what's in front of me, and to eat all of it. This was my first soup to go nearly untouched.
Despite my unreliable soup experience, it's still one of my ways to avoid the pizza, pasta and hamburger diet. Not that they aren't enjoyable (in fact, the pizza is quite tasty), but I have never considered them to be the start of a healthy meal. Have you, the reader, experienced some of the same issues I'm dealing with? What methods do you use to eat healthy, and how do you not overeat?

"the pizza, pasta and hamburger diet"
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a lot of evil carbs. Best wishes to you.
I agree that the food at Georgia Tech's dining halls can sometimes be a letdown. I had a similar experience the first time i had "pho" at Woodruff. The pho resembled nothing of the noodle soup I have enjoyed childhood and I was left quite disappointed.
ReplyDeleteAt Wellesley College (where I went for undergrad), They would serve tomato soup and "Asian soup" on Tuesdays. If tomato soup is made from tomatoes, Asian soup is made from....?
ReplyDeleteI didn't avoid the freshman 15 during college because I didn't realize my metabolism had decided to slow down until the beginning of my sophomore year. (In high school, I literally could out-eat full grown men.) But eating from the salad bar (as well as exercising more) helped me achieve a much healthier constitution during the latter college years.
I've cut sodas from my diet lately. I know the first week or two of school, I always drank coke when getting something to eat. But since then, I've dropped it cold-turkey. And while the pizza and hamburgers are good, I think they should be good once in a while. The pasta line at Woodies is becoming a favorite of mine, even though I have never been a pasta fan.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that Brittain has soups, I'm definitely going to try those out.
ReplyDeleteI think the most unhealthy thing about Brittain for me is the all-you-can-eat style of dining. I've definitely noticed that I've started gaining some weight since I got to Tech. But now I'm trying to either have a salad or just not go for seconds. We'll see how it helps.
I had multiple bowls of beef vegetable soup today actually, it was quite good.
ReplyDeleteMy parents raised me to not be picky and finish everything on my plate also, and it is probably because they are from Taiwan and they lived in poor conditions during their time.
Yeah I have been trying to not be a part of the "freshmen 15." After I finish whatever I eat during breakfast time, I would always grab a fruit on the way out. During lunch, I would add a salad to my meal. And during dinner, I would add a salad and cereal. Also, I drink juice instead of sodas during breakfast and lunch.
Another thing that has helped me is becoming more active at Tech. I attend Taekwondo classes(I'm a beginner) 3 times a week, and I play tennis with my dorm mates every now and then.
Good luck with not becoming fat :P
I never found a soup at Brittain. Aren't the pizza, pasta and hamburger the all things that it can provide?
ReplyDeleteFortunately I live in the west and Woodroof is a little bit better about food.
