Brittain Dining

I have read multiple posts on how "bad" or "disgusting" Brittain is, but what people does not realize is that a person can't expect that much out of cafeteria food. Did anyone have a pleasant food experience in high school cafeterias? I would guess not. Sure, the sausage may have a lot of grease, but all sausages have a lot of grease. Anything that comes from pigs have a lot of grease. If one goes to McDonalds or Waffle House and orders sausage, he/she will notice that it is just as greasy as the ones in Brittain. Unlike 0thers, this post is about which foods are appealing to me in Brittain.

Every morning, the first place I would go to is the omelet stand. The omelets at Brittain are extremely appetizing at Brittain, and is my meal of choice during breakfast/brunch time. One can choose their ingredients of choice laid out before them, which consists of ham, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos, and the ingredient that completes any omelet: cheese. After making your choice, the chef starts cooking and upon finishing, the chef asks, "Do you want cheese?," upon which you say yes or no. Most people goes with just ham and cheese. Personally, I go with Ham, onions, jalapenos, cheese, and extra ham. Upon first glance, it seems that the omelet is cooked well done; however, on you first bite, you'll notice that the omelet is cooked well on the outside and is is warm and pleasantly gooey on the inside and the flavor just seems to just melt on the inside of your mouth, and causes your taste buds to tingle happily.

My personal favorite is the stand next to the bagel/bread stand, or the side that has the tray return. This stand has food that is different from the following days. Usually the stand serves food that comes from a different cultural background. For instance, stir fried vegetables and rice, or sushi hand-rolls. I have not had sushi since I moved to the dormitories in Georgia Tech, and I have to say that Brittain's hand-roll is quite delectable with its sticky, sweet white rice, imitation crab meat, cucumbers, squash, and peppers all conveniently wrapped up in a sheet of seaweed. Of course, one can remove whatever he/she doesn't want with his/her own discretion. To top it all off, can you guess it? Wasabi and soy sauce! I'm not joking when I say this, but their homemade wasabi is probably the best I have ever had. All the wasabi I've ever had from other Japanese restaurants did not give the kick and flavor that the one in Brittain did, and this might be because I like spicy foods. The stir fried vegetables and rice are my favorite meal in Georgia Tech so far, even though their rice isn't the same traditional Chinese rice I am used to. This meal is my favorite because the chef added garlic to it. "Why garlic?," you might ask, but garlic has a unique taste that pertains to my own personal taste. My mother's style of Chinese cooking involves a lot of garlic in each of her dishes, and after my first bite into Brittain's stir fried vegetables and rice, the most satisfying smile came across my face. Even though the meal wasn't as good as my mother's cooking, I really appreciate that Brittain tries to help foreign students feel more at home. After I finished, I complimented the chef and told her that, " That was the best meal I have ever had at Tech."

In conclusion, I just have to say that people just goes to the wrong lines at Brittain. Any meal tastes the best when it is just made. At the stands that I go to, the meals are cooked-to-order.

  1. The omelets are great. Sometimes I actually consider getting up early enough to go get breakfast just so I can get one. Even though the omelets are available everyday, they are the only thing I can always look forward to because they will be good and taste fresh. I actually get hopeful about food when I eat them.

  2. I like the omelets, but sometimes I don't think Brittain has enough variety in their choice of ingredients. I went to IHOP last night and I got an omelet. The menu had at least 15 different options to be included in your omelet! If Brittain could offer a few more choices, not only in omelets, but in every area, I don't think people would complain as much. Honestly, their food's not that bad.

On another note, when does Brittain serve sushi rolls? I would love to try those one day!

  3. I think they had sushi rolls on Thursday.

I agree that it's not that Brittain's food is necessarily bad (don't get me wrong, it's not good either), it's just that it's very monotonous. For example, I just got back from lunch at Brittian and the only things that were open were the grill, the ham/turkey sandwich area, and the salads. Even with the burrito and specialty areas open, that's still not very many choices considering that we are going to be eating there every day for 15 weeks.

  4. I agree that its possible to always find good food at Brittain. I only eat there on weekends so I'm definitely coming from a different standpoint. On the days when it gets monotonous, there is always old reliable: the monotony of monotonies: PB & J. Peanut Butter and Jelly never seems to get old, and it's always provided.

  5. I don't eat too often at the dining hall, because my meal plan is now through my sorority house. However, when I do venture to the fine establishment we call Brittain, I actually enjoy it. Their pasta is pretty good and I like the salad bar, not to mention the soft-serve ice cream. There are definitely some good options at Brittain!
